Making better decisions for your horse starts at the foot
When it comes to endurance and distance riding, there’s one thing that doesn’t have shortcuts:
your horse’s feet.
You can do everything else right—training, nutrition, pacing—but if the hoof isn’t prepared for the work, it will show up sooner or later. And still, this is one of the areas where most riders feel unsure.
It’s Not Just About Protection
A lot of people think about hoof protection as something you add “just in case.” But it’s not just protection. It affects:
- How your horse moves
- How stable they feel on different footing
- How efficiently they use energy
- How well they hold up over time
So the question isn’t just “should I protect the hoof?” …It’s “what kind of system does my horse need?”
Every Horse Is Different
Some horses do great barefoot Some need shoes for support. Others go best in boots, depending on the terrain.
Context matters.
- Soft footing vs. rocky terrain
- Training vs. competition
- Short rides vs. longer distances
What works for someone else’s horse might not work for yours.
You Build the Hoof From the Inside Too
What you feed shows up in the foot. You don’t need to overcomplicate it, but the basics matter:
- Balanced minerals
- Good quality protein
- Healthy gut function
At the end of the day, hoof protection isn’t about following a rule or copying what works for someone else. It’s about understanding your horse as a whole—how they move, what you’re asking of them, and the environment they’re working in.
Good decisions at the foot level support everything else: movement, comfort, longevity, and performance.
And the goal is not to get it “perfect,” but to get it intentional.
